The San Diego JCC Maccabi Experience community outreach was created in an effort to get those who were touched by the San Diego 2008 JCC Maccabi Games keep connected and involved in the local Jewish community.  Within the first year of its inception, the Maccabi Experience made almost 1 million impressions in the San Diego community for numerous programs and organizations.

Lecture Series with Rabbi Jack Reimer continues with “Jezebel, the Marie Antoinette of the Bible”

Tuesday, August 3rd ~ 7:00pm – 8:30pm

JezebelTwo strong personalities, Elijah the prophet and Jezebel the Queen of Israel, clash in this story, and poor King Ahab is caught in the middle between them! What happens when a political marriage brings a fiercely tempered woman from her own kingdom where she belongs to this bewildering Land of Israel where they only have one measly god, and where they have this weird idea that even the king is under the Law.

Rabbi Jack Riemer is the co editor of So That Your Values Live On, a treasury of ethical wills, published by Jewish Lights, and the editor of The World of The High Holy Days, published by the National Rabbinic Network. He is the chair of the National Rabbinic Network, a support system for rabbis across all the denominational lines. He is the former rabbi of Congregation Beth El in La Jolla.

This lecture series is a program of the Agency for Jewish Education and is offered in cooperation with the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture and the Astor Judaica Library.

“Murder in the Torah: Cain, Simeon & Levi, and Moses Stand Trial”

Tuesdays, August 3rd – 17th

Murder in the TorahThe Torah contains stories of the death of countless people, most at the hands of God. Only three incidents rise to the level of human homicide. We will put on trial the perpetrators of these murders to determine if they were justified or not. We will then review rabbinic literature to see how traditional Judaism viewed these troubling chapters in our history.

All About EveEve is much maligned by modern feminists as she was in the past by Christian fundamentalists. But Rabbi Riemer confesses that he has fallen in love with her, even though she is married, and even though she is much older than he is. Come and find out why this woman is so special.

“The Seven Questions You’re Asked in Heaven: Reviewing and Renewing Your Life on Earth”

Wednesdays, August 11th, August 25th and September 1st

How do you get to the heart of a well-lived life? One way may be through asking essential and enduring questions about what matters and why. Based on Ron Wolfson's book The Seven Questions You're Asked in Heaven: Reviewing and Renewing Your Life on Earth, Rabbi Bohm will share Jewish wisdom on what constitutes a purposeful and well-regarded life. We'll discuss the Seven Questions posed by the book and you will have the opportunity to consider these matters in light of the approaching High Holy Day period. (It is not necessary to have read the book.)

Mitzvah Milers Bicycling Group:
Summer Edition

Mitzvah Milers is a group who share a love of cycling and enjoying a great afternoon ride. It provides an environment for cyclists to meet each other while exploring some of the beautiful rides around La Jolla and San Diego. We will meet in the afternoon (weather permitting), at Beth El and go for an approx. 1.5 hour ride.

We welcome you to join us on our rides which are usually at an intermediate level, with moderate hills and a sociable pace. For us, rides are social events, not races, so we make every attempt to ride as a group for safety and camaraderie.

Elul: Renewal of Spirit

The month of Elul is the time to begin to prepare oneself for the Yamim Nora'im (High Holidays). The Waters of Eden/San Diego Community Mikvah & Education Center is sponsoring a workshop at Congregation Beth El: 8660 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, 92037.

Registration/breakfast begins at 8:30am.

An optional Shacharit service begins at 9:00am, and the opening program beings at 9:40am.

This workshop will enable you to begin this preparation process of your mind, body and spirit.

Presenters and participating facilitators include: Rabbi Aliza Berk, Cantor Arlene Bernstein, Gail Braverman, Rabbi Ralph Dalin, Rabbi Janice Elster, Craig Lambert, Rabbi Avi Libman, Yvonne MacNeely, Myla Wingard, and Jeff Zlotnik.

High Holy Day Contemplative Workshop

This workshop focuses on spiritual preparation for the High Holidays by examining the themes of forgiveness, hope and renewal. Using a variety of spiritual tools, we will explore these themes through Jewish meditation, guided visualization, Jewish chanting, group sharing and journaling.

High Holy Days Prep Workshops:
